Short Break in Whitby What to do
Around the town
1. See Whitby Abbey
You can see this amazing landmark from many viewpoints in the town – including from Pantiles’ front door! To see it up close, walk around the ruins and learn about it’s history, take a walk up the 199 steps and visit the Abbey itself, along with the fascinating visitor centre on site, run by English Heritage.
2. Walk the beaches
If the tides are right, you can walk the West beach from Whitby to beautiful Sandsend (and a great selection of cafes) in just over an hour. You can also walk the East side beach (the one with more fossils!) to Saltwick Bay. Both these walks have alternative routes back, if the tide is turning. A clifftop path brings you back from Saltwick, and a regular bus service (or a walk beside the road) will get you back from Sandsend.
3. Pannett Park and Museum
The park has tranquil, tree lined walks to view the plants and wildlife, whatever the season. The museum has an abundance of fascinating exhibits – from huge fossilised Plesiosaurs to Victorian curiosities, rocks and minerals, and lots of information about the history of the area, and locally relevant artwork is on display. Don’t miss the little cafe at the back, downstairs for a good selection of home baking.
4. Quirky shops
Lots of independent, individual shops; art, clothing and mementoes – especially for those inclined towards the Gothic!
5) Great food and drink options
Whitby has always had a huge selection of pubs, catering to all tastes – approximately 35 of them at the moment. Plenty of cafes and restaurants, again to suit all tastes, from fish and chips to tapas, pub grub to fine dining.
6) Bimbling
Just walking about, stopping here and there for an ice cream, or a drink and a bite to eat. On a sunny day, there’s always plenty going on, and lots of great places to stop and watch the world go by.
