Beach Walk to Sandsend
Beach walk to Sandsend
Sandsend is a super-picturesque village, about 2 miles up the coast from Whitby.
There are a few lovely little eating places … Sandside Cafe, Tides, Mary’s, Witsend all great cafes. For a heartier feed, try Fish Cottage (takeaway, with external tables) or The Hart (pub)
To get there, the beautiful walk along the beach from West Pier is around 2 miles (great views, very dramatic), easily done in around an hour. Make sure the tide is right … with a four hour window around the low tide (but this changes with spring tides and storm tides, so check with the coastguard if in doubt)
If the surf’s up, you can often see surfers along the beach on the last stretch as you reach Sandsend. Very occasionally there might be horses being exercised on the beach too.
If you can’t walk the return stretch along the beach, there’s a regular bus service back to Whitby. Check the Arriva app for times. There’s a bus stop at the bottom of Lythe Bank, and another opposite The Hart pub. I think a couple more stops too, but you should check on Google or the app.
Happy walking!
