Eating out in Whitby
Whitby has a great selection of dining choices, to suit every budget and almost every taste. All of the following are around the town centre … so eminently walkable.
The holidaymakers (and many locals!) favourite – fish and chips – has to take top spot. There are many restaurants and take-aways that provide top quality seafood and fish. Notable places include The Magpie, Trenchers, Mr Chips, Royal Fisheries, Abbey Wharf, Quayside, The Fishermans Wife.
There are a couple of very good Italian restaurants, if you’re looking for pasta, pizza, and classic Italian cooking – Cosa Nostra and Moutreys. Also Pizza West (on the West Cliff) is a relative newcomer, but gets very good reviews.
Ditto, The Edge, Tide by Trenchers, The Fat Badger, The Vault, Velveteen are all restaurants that offer a wider range of cuisines – you could probably call it Modern British (except where it’s French!) A hotly anticipated addition to this type of eatery is The Treasury, opening May 2026 in the old Midland Bank building on the corner of New Quay Road and Baxtergate. Another one to think about booking ahead!
Other notable providers of delicious food are Humble Pie & Mash, The Moon and Sixpence, Macy Brown’s (cocktails too), Pescado Lounge.
My favourite – if you like good tapas and wine – is Crocodile, a real gem. It’s very small though, so usually essential to book.
To follow in this series … Cafes, for a canny cuppa and cake … coming in the next month 🙂
